We all want to hit the golf ball straight. Failure to square the clubface at ball impact will result in a closed or opened club face. As a result your ball is going to go right or left, but not straight. In any case we need a perfect guideline how we can square the clubface at ball impact every time.

Good chess players think 3 moves ahead – what does this have to do with the golf grip of our core-balance free-release method?

Hitting a solid golf ball, has 3 very important points to think about, which are connected to the grip: the club head, the left arm and the ball joint of the left shoulder. The ball joint of the left shoulder allows a rotation of the left arm in the time phase backswing and downswing. The arm becomes a natural rotation axis.

Check Yourself if Your Clubface is Square at Ball Impact

Do a self-test: move your club with only your left arm and grip it like you usually do it during the backswing and downswing, like you would hit the ball. Have a look at the result: your clubface is closed now. Right?  But how should it be? The clubface should be square at ball impact. But why is it closed instead of square? It has to do with your natural rotation of the your shoulder joint, which is a ball joint.

I had the idea to use this natural rotation of the left ball joint of the shoulder joint to put the clubface in a square position at ball impact. You will find how this works at our online golf instruction training system.

Try Another Self-Test to Check a Square Clubhead at Ball Impact

With the left thumb on the middle of the grip, and the back of your left hand placed parallel to the target horizon, make another self-test. Perform the backswing and downswing slowly only with your left arm until you reach the ball impact position. You will see that  now your clubhead is placed square to the target, horizontally. Perfect.

The next point is that we have to put the right hip at a neutral position and your ball impacts will be more proper than ever. Sport Science guys call this biomechanical behavior movement “anticipation”. This is the reason because I like to think as good chess players think, because they think 3 steps ahead. This anticipation is like thinking 3 steps ahead.

Why does this grip create more power?

Here is my extra bonus information why this grip creates more power also.

Firstly, understand that this method eliminates negative force vectors on the club head during the downswing. The force vectors will be optimized with this grip until ball-impact. This grip allows you to create up to 3 to 5 mph more power.

Secondly, this grip allows for optimized ball position. My core-balance golf instruction system does not have the goal of taking divots on every shot. If you hit out divots, the deepest point of the golf swing rotation is after the ball impact. But the highest club head speed is always at the deepest point. That means if you take divots you hit the ball before you reach the highest club head speed.

Put Your Ball Minimally to the Left of the Deepest Point

Because of this rule, we put the ball a minimally to the left of the deepest point of your golf swing rotation. This optimization together with the optimized grip allows you to have up to 3 mph more clubhead speed.

The grip of the club is also placed in perfect relation to the lateral lot axis pendulum, spine angle, angle of attack and distance to the body.
