Is the Golf Swing Really Counterintuitive?
It is often said that the golf swing is hard for many reasons and that the most difficult aspect lies in it´s counter-intuitive nature. But is the golf swing really counter-intuitive? What exactly is a counter-intuitive activity? And why do others tell it is not. This is what we will try to explain today and how we are a solution to these problems.
There is a reason that golfers say golf is a hard game to learn. There’s also a reason golf instructors don’t agree with them. This could be one of the major challenges with the current process of instruction.
Let´s look at two typical situations in the golf training and solutions to fix them.
Situation 1:
Golf Pro: “Open your stance to get the ball going in the opposite direction, creating the fade versus the draw”
Golfing students want to know why their instructor wants them to pull their front foot outwards to the left of the target to get the ball to go more to the right. This teaching point is commonly known, according to pros, as fading the ball toward target.
Situation 2:
Golf Pro: “Weaken your grip by moving it over to the left a pinch, aim slightly to the left and swing with an open club face. Tee the ball a little lower.
This instruction doesn’t make sense to the golfing student, as the student thinks the ball will go more to the left by pulling the foot outwards to the left, swinging left away from the target.
Is the Golf Swing Counterintuitive, or Not?
Who’s wrong? The golf student or the golf instructor? Are both right? Is learning to play the game of golf, from a practical perspective, counter-intuitive from the eyes of students? Is it because the golf swing is considered counter-intuitive, that the concept itself… is the ingredient that is making it so hard for students to understand? Especially for most adult students that have been taught to think logically.
Some golf pros believe that the golf swing is counter-intuitive while others believe it is not. I recently had a conversation with a Golf Pro that believes the golf swing is not counter-intuitive, and simply asked if he could provide examples of some things that are counter-intuitive. His reply, “crickets.” Adding, “I’ll get back to you.”
Let´s Compare Counterintuitive Activities in the Golf Swing
Backing up a boat trailer is definitely a counterintuitive activity, and most people can’t do it correctly without hours and hours of practice. Some can’t even do it after one lesson. No matter where you go, you’ll see lots of people that have jack-knifed their boat and trailer, pulling back-and-forth just to launch. The pressure builds as the sailor created a line 1/2-mile long.
Big rig instructors constantly tell trucking students that they need to turn the steering wheel one way in order to get the trailer to go another way. It’s one of the hardest skills to learn as a student.
Logic Prevents the Brain From Executing Correctly
At this point, it has nothing to do with hand – eye coordination or swing technique, as logic prevents the brain from executing the task correctly. To many golfing students, its more about sleight of hand, as in, “Learning how the magician does his magic trick.”
Why is Golf so Hard to Learn?
I have personally met thousands of recreational golfers that say, “I gave up on the learning golf because it was too hard to understand.” Conversely, “I haven’t met a handful of instructors that admit it’s a hard game for students to learn.” Pros always reply, “There is only two moves, back-and-forth, and if students will just trust what we say… it will be easy for them not too.“

What is a Solution for a Perfect Golf Swing?
The solutions for all the problems that Judge described, is our structured Core-Balance FREE-RELEASE Method, developed by Frank Drollinger. This Golf Swing Method is clear structured and combined with written 3D movement descriptions for each phase of the swing.
The most noteworthy is that it has no damaging movements for joints, discs, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees. This unique golf swing method with its whole golf instruction system is valid proven and scientifically published by the Orthopedic Expert and Specialist MD´s Dr. Dietmar Göbel.
Advantages of Consistency Golf Swing
- Students receive a written 3D blueprint, which makes it easier to practice every time.
- There are up to 31 fewer partial movements fewer, which makes the golf swing easier.
- It is taught step-by-step, which makes it easy to follow.
This training system allows students to understand this kind of method system, because it is transparent in all steps. Because of this understanding, a continuous learning process will begin and from now every training will make sense. Students will be able to analyze their swing easily by themselves, which increases the learning process as well.
