Golf Injuries: Self Protection of Our Body – MD Dietmar Göbel
Our body activates self-protection to protect it from damage and overloading. This leads to evasive movements, which unfortunately do not always correspond to the natural movement pattern and therefore lead to further overloading and damage in other areas.
Dr. Dietmar Göbel explains why many golfers do not return to their old performance after injuries and why the thesis for this is that the emotional intelligence of our body refuses to make harmful movements. We automatically activate our self-protection modus.
Emotional Intelligence – Self-Protection
This behaviour which is implemented by our subconscious is called self-protection. Self-protection is something very natural, it is a natural protective reflex of human to change our behaviour when we have had a bad experience. For example, when we grab onto a hot plate, or when we are injured by an absurdly dangerous movement pattern that damages ourselves and is painful for us.
Our body has a emotional intelligence to refuse harmful movements as a kind of self protection. What happens if this behaviour happens in golf? How can we avoid evasive movements? How can we avoid non-sense movements?
Self Protection – We Always Avoid Unhealthy Movements
This means that every athlete unconsciously activates his self-protection. Every athlete who has noticed that the movement pattern, the sequence of movements, damages him, will subconsciously be afraid of the movement again and will try to avoid it. It does not matter for what reason the movement is not acceptable for him, be it because he is not sufficiently trained for it, because he does not have the physical preconditions at all, neither in strength nor in stretching he is sufficiently trained. The fact that we activate self-protection applies to all sports.
Self-Protection Also in Golfing
Athletes have experienced this activation of self-protection in all kinds of sports. For this reason, this naturally also applies to golf.
Changing Movement Patterns
So when we become aware of when the body initiates alternative movements and activates its self-protection. Then we can analyse where damage to the body comes from and why it has occurred. If we know that this movement sequence was non-physiological or could not be done in a natural way at all, then we are forced to change this movement pattern in order to avoid damage to the body.
